About The Artwork

A close friend commissioned Sheppard to cover up an old tattoo in the middle of his back that read “VIVA HATE.” Seeking inspiration, he turned to The Book of Hours once again. In the new design, God was depicted with more godly endowments, and angels were shown trumpeting rainbows. Sheppard pondered whether God, as Nietzsche suggested, had died, or instead had transformed like a butterfly to meet contemporary needs and desires. This transformation, he mused, is the hoped-for metamorphosis for all.
