Biography

Arthur Brouthers is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Charlotte NC. Inspired by abstract expressionism and optical art, his work explores intertwined themes of emotion, frequency, and patterns seen in the natural world.

Most of his works are created using acrylic paint, spray paint, and ink with oversized brushes and homemade tools. His methods of manipulating paint are the result of many years of experimentation with multiple colors in single paint strokes and swipes.Ā  This unconventional process reflects our limited control over nature, and pulls the viewer in through broad gestures and fluid layers of pigment.

Brouthers’ work has been exhibited nationwide in galleries from New York City to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Dallas, Asheville, Charleston, and Charlotte. He has exhibited internationally in Sweden, Scotland and Art Basel Switzerland. From 2016 to the present, he has been featured annually at Art Basel Miami and Armory Week in New York. His artworks have been featured in several major Hollywood films: “The Jade Earring” with Hugh Jackman / Warner Bros, “I Still Believe” Erwin Brothers/ Lionsgate Films, and “Get Out”- a Jordan Peele Film/ Universal Pictures.
